NUvention Medical

NUvention: Medical Innovation is a unique interdisciplinary course designed to create opportunities for students to create new medical technologies and then build businesses around their innovations. This two quarter class was conceived by students within the McCormick, Kellogg, Law and Feinberg schools along with the assistance of the student group, InNUvation, and the McCormick Farley Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

Four schools at Northwestern University are now combining their students, faculty and expertise into a single course all about creating inventions for the biomedical industry. Go behind the scenes of Northwestern's NUVention program.

NUvention Energy

NUvention Energy responds to the demand for innovation and entrepreneurship in the sustainable energy and clean tech space that will increasingly be required to deal with climate change, resource constraint, and other environmental challenges.

Students from engineering, business, arts and sciences, law and other graduate schools across campus will come together in interdisciplinary teams to develop a product or service, and a business plan, in the sustainable energy or clean tech industry. The objective of the course is to provide students with a realistic simulation of the challenges and opportunities entrepreneurial founding teams face trying to create a business around technologies or services that both meet a market need and have a positive environmental impact.

Past NUvention Energy teams have gone on to compete in national business plan competitions and have collectively won over $100,000.

impact

NUvention: Innovate for Impact is an interdisciplinary experiential learning program designed to expose students to the design and launch of market-based ventures that address unmet needs in resource limited settings. The social entrepreneurial approach to addressing global challenges such as poverty, hunger, lack of access to sanitation, the need for sustainable energy supply and affordable health care will be the focus of the course. Innovate for Impact will walk students through the steps associated with creating and implementing a social venture—a venture that addresses a social issue while simultaneously being financially self-sufficient.

Students will be exposed to design-thinking for social impact, market and nonmarket contexts of resource-limited settings and the nuts-and-bolts of launching a venture. In addition to the classroom component, Innovate for Impact is unique in that it will include a two-week field research component, where student teams are completely immersed in the communities with which they are working. Like other NUvention courses, Innovate for Impact represents the most aggressive attempt to allow students to create a start-up social venture within the framework of a class.
